The Tanzanian Crackdown on Planned Protest Leaves Streets Unusually Quiet.
A significant security presence has been deployed throughout the country with officers and soldiers observed on patrol in key urban areas ahead of expected demonstrations against the government called to coincide with the nation's independence anniversary.
By midday, however, no demonstrations had begun.
People living in several major urban centers noted the day began with unusual quietness, with a large number opting to stay home amid uncertainty over whether protests would happen.
The protests were organized to call for political reforms in the wake of the unrest that followed last October's elections which left an unknown number of people dead.
Authorities Admit Use of Force
Officials have conceded using force against protesters, asserting that certain elements aimed to topple the government.
On Tuesday, reporters observed streets that were largely deserted in the business hub, Dar es Salaam. This was a stark contrast to the city's typical weekday activity.
While quiet, a palpable tension filled the air.
Heightened Security Nationwide
Armored vehicles were spotted cruising along primary thoroughfares and junctions, while personnel were stationed at key points, including around important public buildings and facilities.
On social media, activists and campaigners urged followers to remain vigilant, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. The messaging echoed previous protest calls in Tanzania, when turnout increased later in the day.
Drivers who went out experienced regular stops at security checkpoints, where police interrogated motorists about their destinations.
Official Position and Bans
Authorities have not provided detailed comments on the heightened security measures or on the planned protests.
The government has prohibited the planned protests and cancelled independence day celebrations, advising the public to remain at home.
"With many staying at home the atmosphere is quiet but tense."
The overall situation depicted a nation on edge, where the threat of protest led to a security clampdown in advance that left conspicuously quiet typically busy urban centers.
